About usThe hospital has two branches - The Nairobi Women's Hospital - Hurlingham and The Nairobi Women's Hospital - Adams. These branches are located in Hurlingham on Argwings Kodhek Rd and opposite the Adams Arcade off Ngong Rd respectively. Clients therefore have two options to choose from for admission purposes. Both hospitals have well - conditioned theatre facilities, a fully fledged maternity wing, male and female general wards, medical and surgical wards, paediatric wards and for more private accommodation, we have VIP and Private rooms available on request.
The Gender Violence Recovery Centre (GVRC) is the hospital’s corporate social responsibility which cares for persons who have undergone sexual assault and/ or domestic violence. These services are available at both branches. On AdmissionIf our resident doctor determines your need for admission, you will be directed to the Admissions Desk where you will complete your admission paperwork. Please call your relatives and friends to inform them of the same.
In case of referral by your private doctor, please remember to carry the referral letter from your doctor and hand it in during admission. Our staff will then contact your doctor to inform him of your arrival. Financials For clients not covered by insurance (i.e. cash-paying clients), you will be requested for a cash deposit upon admission. We accept debit and credit cards but for personal cheques, prior arrangement with the Chief Finance Officer is necessary.
If you have medical insurance, please produce your medical insurance card or letter of undertaking at the cashier’s office Personal effectsOn admission, you will be provided with a hospital gown, towel, face flannel, slippers, basin, tissue and soap. You will also be provided with a locker to put your personal belongings. It is however advisable to keep any large amounts of money, jewelery and any other personal valuables with our nurse-in-charge for safe custody. Before surgeryUnless otherwise discussed with your doctor, the basic plan before surgery is as below: - Do not eat or drink anything on the day of surgery
- You may brush your teeth but do not swallow any water
- You will be assisted by the nurse to remove any nail polish and any jewellery you may have worn
- You may be required to run some lab and other tests prior to the surgical procedure
The medical team will then wheel you to the theatre where the anaesthetist will prepare you for the surgery and administer the anaesthesia. The surgery will then be performed, after which you will be moved to the Recovery Area for close monitoring, before being wheeled back to the wards. We also offer Day-Case surgeries, whereby the client is operated on and discharged within 24hours. Please discuss your options with the doctor. A typical day in the wardThis is the general schedule in the wards: - Every morning a medical team, including a doctor, will visit you to check your recovery progress. For private patients, your doctor will visit as discussed with you, however, the medical staff will be in discussion with your doctor and act on any instructions given.
- The doctor will make recommendations including: lab tests, referrals to a specialist or any other tests
- A nurse will monitor your vital signs (temperature and blood pressure) at regular intervals throughout the day and night
- Medications will be given by the nurse, as required
- Meals selected by the patient, with advice from the doctor, will be provided three times a day, with a warm beverage in between the meals.
Visiting Hours Our visiting hours are as below: - 12.30pm-2.00pm
- 4.30pm-8.00pm
- Additional hours for husbands (of new mothers): 7.00-8.00am
Meals for your visitorsOur cafeteria, located on the ground floor, offers delicious and nutritious meals where your visitors can have a meal at affordable rates. SundaysWe offer Chaplaincy services, for the patients who are interested, through a Sunday prayer and worship service. Feel free to arrange with your pastor/ priest/ spiritual leader to make you a personal visit while in hospital Your Rights as a patientAs a patient using our services, we respect your rights as follows. A right to: - Prompt life-saving treatment without discrimination of any kind
- Obtain the name and specialty of any person responsible for your care during your admission
- Confidentiality of all your medical records and privacy during your medical treatment
- Prompt and safe transfer to another medical facility if you are unable to continue paying your medical bills
- Talk to the Manager on Duty in case of any unresolved issue in your medical or other care while admitted

- Request for your medical bill update as often as possible so as to ensure you are aware of the expenses well before you are discharged. It is also advisable to keep topping up on the deposit so as to keep your bill at minimum levels.
- Be open and honest with us about your medical history and any medications or substances that you may be using.
- Inform us about any situation at home or work that may hinder your recovery so that we may direct you to resources that may be helpful.
- Inform your doctor if you are not able to follow through with the health plan or drugs or if the drugs prescribed are not working as expected.
- Express any other concerns you may have to your care-givers
Discharge procedure- Once the doctor has discharged you from the hospital, he will prescribe some discharge drugs and also probably give you an appointment date for further follow-up
- Our Finance Department will then furnish you with your final bill after your discharge. If you are covered by insurance or your company, please remember to inform our cashiers at the point of admission so as to save time during your discharge
- Ensure also that your NHIF papers are up to date so as to ensure a swift discharge process. For admitted babies, the child’s birth certificate will be required for the parent’s NHIF card to be processed
- Once you have paid up your bill, you will receive a Clearance Form from the Nursing Desk, which you will use to collect your discharge drugs. This form will be left in the Pharmacy
- On discharge you will also receive the Discharge Summary detailing your discharge instructions from the doctor, your prescription and an appointment date
- Please ensure you have made arrangements for transport from the hospital to your home. Our ambulance is also available to transport you home at a reasonable fee.
